-Protest songs began to properly develop into their own art form in the 1930s with the emergence of Electrical music. Billie Holiday’s song in 1939: ‘Strange Fruit’ demonstrated this
-In the 60s, the civil rights movement was dominating the media which inspired Sam Cooke’s ‘A Change Is Gonna Come’ which shows the struggles of African Americans in the 1960s
-During the 80s and 90s the amount of protest songs being produced died down however some prominent ones in the 80s include ‘Fuck Tha Police’ which focused on young black men in LA and ‘Testify’ which criticised George W Bush. The 90s held a short-lived movement of young feminists associated with punk-rock music which included ‘Rebel Girl’ by Bikini Kill
Some good information here. Make sure you consider more contemporary protest songs as well. Miss Cook :)
